Pond bottom drains simply push dirty pond water to the filter and push it back into the pond once it is clean.

Another option is to use expanding foam to fill any voids and provide a smooth surface for the liner.
Reach in to make sure both the liner and sump are both clean and dry with a rag.
It is very important to make sure you have enough liner around all the sides of your pond before you cut the drain in.
Make sure liner is properly aligned so that the liner extends over all the outer edges of the pond then cut a 2 inch hole in the liner over the bottom drain opening only.
